An in-flight tail load measurement program has been carried out in The211u001eNetherlands in order to validate the procedures that are currently used for the 211u001edetermination of tail load spectra and to improve the statistical knowledge of 211u001egusts and maneuvers, with respect to tail loads. In this measurement program tail 211u001eloads, including lateral accelerations of the rear fuselage and vertical center 211u001eof gravity accelerations, have been obtained from a commercially operated Fokker 211u001e100 aircraft flying European routes. The paper describes how the vertical and 211u001elateral gust statistics have been derived from measured accelerations. A 211u001ecomparison is made between vertical and lateral gust statistics, both for 211u001ediscrete and continuous types of gusts. Vertical gust statistics (discrete and 211u001ePSD) compared very well with earlier results from FAA/NRL. Also the continuous 211u001e(PSD) gust statistics for lateral gusts compared very well with the results found 211u001efor vertical gusts. The derived lateral (discrete) gust velocities however 211u001eproduced results that are not in line with the vertical gust velocities, 211u001eindicating that care should be taken with the application of the discrete lateral 211u001egust approach.
