Charts for Remediation of Highly Plastic Clay Embankments in Texas

Clay embankments along Texas highways have been prone to shallow slope failures211u001ethat occur a number of years after construction. Typical embankments that have 211u001efailed are constructed of highly plastic clays, with heights ranging from 3 o 9 m 211u001e(10 to 30 ft) and their side slopes at 2:1 or flatter. This report presents the 211u001edevelopment of design charts for shallow slides. Strengthenting of the soil with 211u001eadditives and reinforcement with geosynthetics are the two methods considered. 211u001eNumerous limit equilibrium slope stability analyses were performed to define the 211u001eeffects of soil and reinforcement strength properties and the geometry of the 211u001eremediated zone. Results of these analyses were plotted in dimensionless form to 211u001eproduce design charts to assist engineers in the remediation of shallow slope 211u001efailures.
