RATU2: The Finnish Research Programme on the Structural Integrity of NuclearPower Plants. Interim Report 1995-April 1997

The projects within the Finnish public funded research program on the structuralintegrity of nuclear power plants (RATU2) are briefly introduced and the scientific and technical results obtained during the first two years, 1995-April 1997, are summarized in this report. The program is organized into five research projects on the following topics: Material degradation in the reactor environment; Reliability of nondestructive inspections of nuclear power plants; Structural analyses for nuclear power plant components, Maintenance strategies and dependability, and Fire safety. The aging of the structures and components in the Finnish nuclear power plants is one of the main issues to be considered when safety and economic operation of the plants is evaluated. At the same time, ways are being sought to extend the lifetime of components. The first half of the RATU2 research program has already brought significant scientific findings and useful applications for ensuring the reliability of NPP components.
