Wavelets and Their Use in the Detection and Characterization of TransientSignals. (Wavelets og Deres Anvendelse for Deteksjon og Karakterisering av Transiente Signaler)

This work represents a self contained mathematical foundation for the detectionand characterization of transients using wavelet transforms. Selected techniques, most of them wavelet based, are demonstrated using experimental data from tests at sea under project 711 CHESS. A matched filter based on orthonormal wavelet transforms is implemented. By basing the matched filter on only a few relevant wavelet transform coefficients, several advantages arise, the most important being a faster algorithm, reduced storage needs, and a better separation of events occurring at different scales than in the case of a traditional matched filter.
