NGV fuel containers are typically mounted on vehicles using steel strapsapproximately 2 inches wide. This report examines the performance of various cyclinder designs containing defects that can be concealed by the mounting strap. Tests were performed on the following cyclinder types: all-steel, all-aluminum, aluminum liner hoop-wrapped with E-glass composite, steel liner hoop-wrapped with E-glass, aluminum liner fully-wrapped with E-glass, aluminum liner fully-wrapped with carbon fiber, and plastic liner overwrapped with carbon E-glass hybrid. The damage to the containers was either induced in-service by mounting straps or was introduced in the laboratory to simulate strap damage. The test results demonstrated that the amount of concealed damage that could occur under straps up to 2 inches wide is insufficient to prevent containers from meeting the minimum pressure cycling requirements in NGV container standards.
