Gauge Theories and the Unification of Particle Interactions

摘要

This is a non-mathematical exposition of the role of quantum gauge theories inthe Standard Model of particle physics. Some prospects for unification of the gauge interactions are explored. The use of scalar fields in the breaking of symmetry between various gauge forces and in connecting bosons with fermions through supersymmetry is discussed.
