Performance indicators are just what they say-indications of performance, orpieces of evidence indicating how well a program is meeting its goals or objectives. Performance indicators help programs highlight their successes, identify areas for improvement, and develop new approaches to achieving desired program results. As part of a government-wide effort to improve the performance and accountability of all federal programs, in 1993 the U.S. Congress passed the Government Performance and Results Act (known as the Results Act), establishing a process for using performance indicators to set goals for program performance and to measure and report program results.
