Radial Gate Evaluation: Vallecito Dam, Colorado

Three 37-foot wide by 19-foot high radial gates are used to control flow throughthe spillway at Vallecito Dam. The spillway gates were designed in 1940. The gates are float operated for automatic operation, the arms are counterweighted. The gate arm assemblies consist of three separate channel-shaped beams, with multiple bracing and a cover plate between the beams. The arms pivot about a 7.75-inch diameter pin and a bronze graphite-insert type spherical bearing. The pin is cantilevered and supported by a pin hinge anchor embedded in the pier. The drawings show that stoplog slots upstream of the radial gates are not provided in the concrete piers. Selected drawings of the gates and hoists are located in appendix A. Evaluation of the axial compressive stresses indicates the radial gate arms are satisfactory for a reservoir elevation at the top of the gate.
