Millimeter Wave Frequency Multipliers Based on a Planar Schottky Varactor

A frequency tripler for 180 GHz and a frequency doubler for 200 GHz utilizing aplanar surface channel Schottky varactor are presented. The tripler employs conventional crossed waveguide design with quartz microstrip filters and tunable input and output backshorts. The doubler employs novel split-waveguide mount design with two sliding backshorts at both input and output frequency. The theoretical maximum efficiency of the tripler is 46.2% with input power level of 21 mW and the theoretical maximum output power is calculated to be 11.4 mW with the highest available input power level of 30 mW. The measured maximum efficiency is 0.4% and the maximum output power is only about 0.1 mW. In the case of the doubler the theoretical maximum efficiency is 44.0% with input power level of 32 mW and the maximum output power is 16.5 mW with input powerlevel of 50 mW. The measured maximum efficiency of the doubler is 7.1% and the maximum output power is 2.6 mW.
