Profile and Segmentation of Light/Light Medium Duty Vehicles. Final Report, April1996-April 1997

This report profiles the population of light and light medium trucks and buses incommercial service (weight classes 2 to 5) segmented by several ownership and operating characteristics. These include vocational usage, fleet size, annual fuel consumption, age of vehicle and whether the vehicle was purchased new or used. These characteristics were employed to identify opportunities for natural gas-powered vehicles. The analysis found that while there are approximately 620,000 light and light medium duty vehicles that consume 2,000 gallons or more of fuel (gasoline or diesel) annually, there are approximately 95,500 vehicles that consume 2,000 gallons or more a year and were purchased net in the past five years. These vehicles consume 169 million gallons of gasoline and 56.5 million gallons of diesel fuel annually. The reason that these criteria were applied is that used buyers are unlikely to invest in a natural gas conversion and new buyers are unlikely to invest in a conversion on vehicles more than five years old.
