Transportation remains a vital component of California's economy and affects the211u001equality of life for many individuals. The current system, however, also creates 211u001echallenges and problems. The state can play an important role in identifying 211u001eoptions to help maximize the benefits currently enjoyed from transportation, and 211u001ealso reduce its adverse impacts. For example, the transportation sector 211u001econtributes large amounts of air pollutants in California. Tailpipe and 211u001eevaporative emissions contribute to the formation of ozone. Tailpipe emissions 211u001ealso add to carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Through 211u001edependence on one fuel the state economy is vulnerable to petroleum price 211u001eincreases which pose an energy security risk. Reducing this risk can be achieved 211u001eby developing alternative fuel vehicle technologies that offer choices for the 211u001edriving public.
