New Aerosol Filter Inlet System for Use on Aircraft

A new type of aerosol inlet nozzle that houses a conical filter inside itsexpansion cone (diffuser) section was designed and built for high-efficiency aerosol collection from an aircraft sampling platform. The size and shape of this new inlet, especially the leading-edge surfaces, were made very similar to those of a second inlet nozzle so that the relative passing efficiencies for aerosol chemical species could be compared. This second inlet was a conventional (diffuser-type) inlet (C1) capable of passing particles through to a transfer tube and finally to a downstream filter. Wind tunnel and aircraft intercomparison studies were conducted for the purpose of evaluating relative inlet performance.
