Radial Gate Evaluation: Rye Patch Dam, Nevada

Five 20-foot wide by 17-foot high radial gates are used to control flow throughthe spillway at Rye Patch Dam. The spillway gates were designed in 1935. The gate arm assemblies consist of four wide flange beams supporting the faceplate plate at the three horizontal girders. The arms pivot about a 4.5-inch diameter pin and graphite-insert bronze, bushing. The radial gates are at the pin bearing assembly bolted to the cantilevered anchor girder. The gates were operated by a one-part wire rope 16,000 pound capacity hoise, powered by a rail-mounted portable electric drive unit. The Rye Patch radial gates are similar in design to the Caballo Dam and Sumner (Alamogordo) Dam gates.
