Chiropractic in the United States: Training, Practice, and Research

This research report was developed under grant No. HS 07915 by the Center forHealth Studies, Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound (Seattle, Washington). In view of the growing popularity of chiropractic care, it is important that health care providers, insurers, policymakers, persons with back pain have a better understanding of the current capabilities and limitations of chiropractic care. This report, which reflects a collaboration among scholars, researchers, and practitioners from both the medical and chiropractic communities, attempts to provide an unbiased overview of what is and is not known about the profession and practice of chiropractic. The report contains information on the history and development of chiropractic, chiropractic training and licensure of practitioners, insurance coverage for chiropractic services, chiropractic in the health care system, and benefits and risks of spinal manipulation. It also discusses future chiropractice research priorities and policies issues.
