This decision document presents the selected remedial action of Operable Unit 1at the Former Weldon Spring Ordnance Works (WSOW), in the Weldon Spring, Missouri. The selected remedy for Operable Unit 1 incorporates both treatment and containment technologies for remediation of soil and pipeline media at the site. The remedy includes incineration of nitroaromatics-contaminated soils and wooden pipeline, stabilization and on-site landfill of lead-contaminated soils, and on-site landfill of construction debris separated from the contaminated soils. These proven technologies will substantially reduce risks associated with the contaminated materials that represent the principal threat at the site, and provide for permanent destruction of the nitroaromatics contamination. The selected remedy also eliminates a source of nitroaromatics to the groundwater.
