摘要

The organizational structures of state correctional systems in the U.S. are very211u001ediverse. Every possible variation exists in terms of the degree of centralization 211u001eand decentralization among the 50 states. In every state, a state department of 211u001ecorrections (DOC) has jurisdiction over all state prisons. Other corrections 211u001efunctions such as probation, parole, and community corrections facilities such as 211u001ehalfway houses, are also under DOC jurisdiction in some states. However, in 211u001eothers, these services may be operated by a separate agency, or overseen by the 211u001ecourts, or coordinated at the county level. In all but six states, jails are 211u001ecounty operations, run at the local level by a sheriff's office or a county 211u001ecorrections agency or, in some places, under contract by a private firm. This 211u001edocument describes the provision of jail services in the six states that have 211u001eintegrated state-level prison and jail systems.
