Aviation Safety: Installation of Smoke Detection and Fire Suppression Systems in211 U.S. Transport Aircraft

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning to issue new regulations to211u001eupgrade the fire safety standards for cargo or baggage compartments in certain 211u001epassenger and cargo aircraft. These regulations would require that approximately 211u001e3,700 existing aircraft be retrofitted to include fire suppression and/or smoke 211u001edetection systems in their cargo or baggage compartments and that all new 211u001eaircraft entering service include such systems. We reviewed the actions under way 211u001eat FAA and within the aviation industry to effect these changes within the 3-year 211u001etime frame proposed by FAA. We addressed the following questions: What is the 211u001estatus of FAA's and the airline industry's efforts to equip aircraft cargo 211u001ecompartments with new smoke detection and fire suppression systems; and What 211u001efactors may affect the timetable for equipping the entire fleet with this new 211u001eequipment.
