The U.S. Social Security program is a national system of Old-Age, Survivors, andDisability Insurance (OASDI) cash benefits. The program's basic idea is a simple one: during working years employees, their employers, and self-employed persons pay Social Security taxers; when the worker's earnings stop or are reduced due to retirement, disability, or death, monthly cash benefits are paid to replace part of the earnings the worker and the family have lost.
