Field Comparison of the Vaisala CT12K and CT25K Ceilometers

A side-by-side comparison of two different Vaisala, Inc., laser ceilometers(model numbers CT12K and CT25K) is described. The comparison is used to judge whether one ceilometer has more or less cloud detection sensitivity than the other. The authors concluded that the ceilometers have roughly the same sensitivity to clouds with the base elevations less than 3810 m, the detection limit for the CT12K. The time series of hourly medial cloud bases were also well correlated (R(sup 2) = 0.96), with the CT25K reporting higher cloud bases than the CT12K by an average of 23 m.
