A random signal (if present) is located somewhre in a time interval characterizedby a total of N search bins, along with uniform noise. The signal is burst-like and occupies a contiguous set of M bins, but the location of the M bins occupied by the signal is unknown. Also, the average signal level S in an occupied bin is arbitrary and unknown.
