Tropical forests are disappearing at an alarming rate as demand for tropicalforest products increases with world population. To protect the natural forests, the production of fuel, food, fodder, timber, poles, and other tree products must be shifted to plantation and farm forestry systems. With this concern in mind, in 1992 the USDA Forest Service (USDA/FS) and the Nitrogen Fixing Tree Association (NFTA) designed a series of international workshops to address multipurpose tree species and their uses. NFTA's panel of International Associates, a renown group of individuals having vast experience with the research and use of multipurpose trees, assisted by identifying focal topics for the workshop series. They chose Albizia and Paraserianthes as genera in need of further examination.
