Wind Loads on Untethered-Span-Wire Traffic-Signal Poles

A questionnaire was sent to transportation agencies in all other states todetermine the procedures being used elsewhere to estimate loads on span-wire traffic-signal poles. Then an untethered-span-wire traffic-signal pole was instrumented to measure actual loads transferred to the pole from the span wire. The resulting data were compared with appropriate procedures suggested by ASSHTO and the Department. Design procedures used by New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) for untethered-span-wire signal poles also were reviewed in detail. This report summarizes this study and the results.
