The Higher Education Act of 1965, Title II-B, Fellowship Program, was first211u001eenacted to alleviate the critical shortage of professionally trained librarians 211u001eand the serious shortage of graduate library school faculty. During the ensuing 211u001eyears, the program's emphasis shifted variously between the recruitment of 211u001eminorities or specialized training. This document summarizes a descriptive survey 211u001eof fellowships awarded under the Library Education and Human Resource Development 211u001eProgram (formerly the Library Career Training Program), Title II-B of the Higher 211u001eEducation Act of 1965. The study covers the years 1985 through 1991. It was 211u001eundertaken for the purpose of determining the success of the fellows who were 211u001erecruited into the training program, and to determine if this training enabled 211u001ethem to enter the library profession or re-enter with enhanced skills to further 211u001etheir careers. This report will answer the questions, 'Were the grantee 211u001einstitutitons able to fill the fellowships awarded', 'Did these fellows complete 211u001ethe training program or drop out', and 'Were the fellows able to obtain 211u001eemployment in the library community once the training program was over.' To this 211u001eend the study provides: (1) Statistical records of individual years as well as a 211u001esummary of the sex and ethnicity of all fellows recruited, by degree level, 211u001eincluding degree attainment status. (2) Analyses of the above data. (3) Detailed 211u001ereport and analysis of post-training employment status of all fellows recruited. 211u001e(4) Statistical record of the awards by institution.
