In this paper an overview will be presented of the development of the most recent211u001efamily of so-called 'Velocity Prediction Programs' (VPP). The development of the 211u001etheory behind the Delft Systematic Yacht Hull Series, an overview of the results 211u001eand the basic principles of the formulations that are derived from these 211u001esystematic results. Emphasis will also be placed on the possibilities and 211u001elimitations of the use of the VPP in predicting the speed and performance of 211u001esailing yachts. The possibilities introduced by the incorporation of 211u001eComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the performance prediction will be shown. A 211u001enumber of practical examples will be presented to show the possible use of these 211u001eVPP's in the design process of sailing yachts.
