Spatial Stability of the Compressible Attachment-Line Boundary Layer and211 Generalized Similarity Properties

The authors consider the linear stability of compressible attachment-line flow211u001ewithin the spatial framework. A fully two-dimensional approach is developed to 211u001ecompute the eigensolutions. The results show that compressibility has a 211u001establizing influence on the attachment-line boundary layer. The mode which 211u001esatisfies the Gortler-Hammerlin assumption appears as the least stable mode. 211u001eFurthermore, the results show that other two-dimensional modes which have 211u001eapproximately the same wave number and growth rate exist. These modes satisfy an 211u001eextended similarity model and show algebraic growth in the chordwise coordinate 211u001efor high Reynolds numbers. Thus, in the chordwise direction these two-dimensional 211u001emodes are shown to grow faster than the mode satisfying the Gortler-Hammerlin 211u001eassumption. Moreover, this algebraic growth in the chordwise direction increases 211u001efor the more stable modes.
