ITS Focus Report on System Architecture. Evaluation of the US National ITS211 Architecture and Recommendations for the UK

This report reflects the findings of a task force set up by ITS Focus to study211u001ethe US National ITS Architecture and consider whether the UK should develop or 211u001eadopt such an architecture. The task force was made up of representatives from 211u001elocal and national highway authorities, communications companies, ITS designers 211u001eand system integrators, motor manufacturers, academics and transport consultants. 211u001eThe strengths of the representation and the time and effort contributed 211u001edemonstrates the importance attached to this issue by both public and private 211u001esectors. During the course of the review the team examined the approach and 211u001econtent of the US architecture and analyzed its strengths and weaknesses with 211u001erespect of the UK and European situation. The members considered the benefits of 211u001edescribing and adopting a formal architecture, the lessons that could be learned 211u001efrom the US experience and proposed a strategy for taking forward an architecture 211u001ewithin the UK and Europe.
