A new chemiluminescence imaging instrument has been constructed to study211u001eheterogeneous oxidation effects in polymers. The described equipment is based on 211u001ean imaging photon counting system mounted to a specially designed oven with 211u001econtrolled atmosphere and gas flow rate. To point out possible applications of 211u001ethe technique, measurements of oxygen diffusion in hydroxyl terminated 211u001epolybutadiene (HTPB) are presented. It is found that surface treatment with a 211u001esilicon-oxygen monomer by plasma technique temporary reduces the permeation of 211u001eoxygen in HTPB at 100 deg C in ambient atmosphere. After failure of the barrier 211u001esurface the HTPB sample exhibits a time-delayed but similar oxygen diffusion 211u001ebehavior as an untreated sample. Results from measurements on surface treated 211u001esamples illustrate effects which may arise in elastomers with a highly oxidized 211u001esurface (oxidation skin) and a relatively unaffected core. The results show on 211u001ethe simplicity of the chemiluminescence imaging technique to monitor oxygen 211u001ediffusion and effects of diffusion controlled oxidation. The technique should be 211u001every interesting for the Swedish Defence since it opens up a new way to study 211u001eaging effects in polymer materials and products.
