NATO Enlargement; Promoting Social Stability or Strategic Balance

The first round of NATO enlargement to Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic211u001epotentially challenges the stability it intends to promote. First, geopolitically 211u001eNATO has extend the territory covered by its defense guarantee up to Russia's 211u001eborders. Second, NATO may have 'imported' instability into the Alliance by 211u001eadmitting Hungary and excluding Hungary's neighbours. Strategies to avoid 211u001ecreating a new dividing line in Europe and to enhance stability for states not 211u001eadmitted to NATO are essential for NATO to develop.
