On September 16-17, 1997, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and211u001eHealth (NIOSH) conducted a site visit at Valley High School in West Des Moines, 211u001eIowa, in response to a management request for a health hazard evaluation (HHE). 211u001eThe request asked NIOSH to assess indoor air quality and measure exposures to 211u001ecrystalline silica in the art rooms at this school. The source of crystalline 211u001esilica was clay and various glazes used during ceramics courses in art room 403. 211u001eThe request was initiated folloing an employee complaint filed with the Iowa 211u001eDepartment of Labor Services, Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Division, 211u001eregarding potential exposure to dust and silica from clays. The IOSH 211u001eadministrator recommended that school officials request a NIOSH HHE. Adverse 211u001ehealth effects reported in the IOSH complaint included respiratory difficulties, 211u001edizziness, nausea, and chronic sneezing.
