The study investigates control methods and technologies used in the drycleaning211u001eindustry for reducing occupational exposures to tetrachloroethylene 211u001e(Perchloroethylene-PERC). It also examines drycleaning machines that use 211u001epetroleum-based solvents. It addresses methods for controlling exposures to 211u001espotting chemicals, fire, and ergonomic hazards in commercial drycleaning shops. 211u001eData were gathered during ten field surveys at drycleaning shops across the U.S. 211u001eand through a World Health Organization fellowship in Europe. The study looked at 211u001ethe various categories of drycleaning equipment, full-shift exposures to PERC, 211u001ethe use of another cleaning media, local and general ventilation, inhalation of 211u001espotting chemicals, ergonomic hazards, workstation design, fire hazards and 211u001eexplosions. Information gathered during the study was supplemented by a 211u001eliterature review. This report provides a reference for anyone interested in 211u001eprotecting drycleaning workers from occupational hazards associated with this 211u001eindustry.
