Partner Abuse as a Precursor of Female Homicide and Suicide in North Carolina,1989-1993. Final Performance Report

Homicide and suicide are important elements of the public health and socialproblem of violence against women. Despite the enormous impact of this fatal violence, the gener-specific patterns of homocide and suicide and the implications of these patterns for research, intervention and evaluatioon have not been adequately explored. Additionally, although prior victimization, by both strangers and partners has been implicated as precursors to homicide and suicide, research on these topics have been limited. This study was designed to bridge this gap in knowledge and examine the epidemiology of women's homicide and suicide victimization in order to realistically illustrate women's risks of lethal violence in order to develop a framework within which to devise appropriate and effective intervention strategies and further epidemiological and criminal justice research.
