Evaluation of Knowledge Transfer in an Immersive Virtual LearningrnEnvironment for the Transportation CommunityrnbyrnGlynn W. Cavin, Ph.D.rnMary Leah Coco, Ph.D.
In the year 2009 alone, 667 individuals were killed in the United States in highway constructionrnor maintenance work zones. More alarmingly, the total number of individuals killed in arnhighway construction or maintenance work zone in the U.S. since 2003 is a staggering 6,438rn(National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, 2010). The Louisiana Department ofrnTransportation and Development (DOTD) defined a highway construction or maintenance workrnzone as an area of highway with maintenance, construction, or utility work activities (DOTD,rn2010). This type of work zone is normally marked by temporary traffic control devices such asrnsigns, channeling devices, barriers, pavement markings, and/or work vehicles. Working in arnhighway construction or maintenance work zone is a highly physical activity that requiresrnextreme focus, planning, and process implementation (Louisiana Department of Transportationrnand Development, 2010).
