Evaluation of AHCPR Minority Health Services Research Training Activities

This report reviews Agency for Health Policy and Research (AHCPR) initiatives inhealth services research training to determine the degree to which they have increased minority participation in health services research. It examines two types of initiatives: (1) pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training provided through National Research Service Award (NRSA) grants; and (2) supplementary funding made available to individual AHCPR grantees for the purpose of providing training to individual minority candidates or investigating an area related to minority issues in health services. The report finds that AHCPR has been somewhat successful in increasing minority participation in health services research training. It identified five criteria that are necessary for program success: recruitment, leadership, networking, mentoring, and building a community of scholars.
