Poseidon: A Simulator for Optoelectronic Semiconductor Devices

The aim of this work is to develop a general-purpose semiconductor devicesimulator which includes physical models for the simulation of quantum well devices and optoelectronic devices. Chapter 2 gives a detailed description of the physical processes incorporated into the simulator and states the assumptions and approximations used to model them. The description includes bulk semiconductor physics, quantum well physics, and optics. In Chapter 3, the numerical techniques used to solve the physical model established in Chapter 2 are described. This chapter includes a description of the time and space discretization techniques, followed by a discussion of the boundary conditions for the various equations. The chapter concludes with a brief description of the implementation of the numerical method into the computer software POSEIDON. Chapter 4 deals with the various devices that have been simulated with the POSEIDON simulator. Simulation results are dicussed: semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA); multiple quantum well electro-absorption modulators; and avalanche photodiodes (ADP). Finally, in Chapter 5 the simulator is evaluated. This chapter also summarizes the capabilities and limitations of POSEIDON.
