Low-Input On-Farm Composting of Grass Straw Residue

In cropping fields of grass seed, straw removal is required to promote tiller211u001egrowth and reduce pest incidence. In the past, straw removal was done by open 211u001efield burning, which is being phased out in many regions through legislative 211u001emandates. Composting grass residue provides a possible alternative to open field 211u001eburning in grass seed and other cropping systems in which plant residue waste 211u001epresents cultural management problems.
