The Services Research Outcomes Study (SROS), the first nationally representative211u001estudy of substance abuse treatment outcomes, confirms that both drug use and 211u001ecriminal behavior are reduced following drug abuse treatment--inpatient, 211u001eoutpatient and residential. These positive findings were determined through a 211u001esurvey of 1,799 (71.4% male and 28.6% female) persons. Substance abuse histories 211u001eon each of the clients were provided by a nationwide sample of 99 drug treatment 211u001efacilities. All 1,799 clients were interviewed five years following discharge 211u001efrom drug abuse treatment and are representative of the 976,012 individuals 211u001edischarged from treatment in 1990. The SROS is the first among a series of 211u001eoutcome studies to include a nationally representative sample of drug treatment 211u001eprograms located in rural, suburban and urban locations.
