This report reviews the literature related to the use of dynamic conepenetrometers (DCP) for evaluating soil and paving material strength. Automation of this process means more efficient and cost effective data collection, and the design, fabrication and operation of an automated dynamic cone penetrometer (ADCP) is described. Demonstration and calibration tests with the ADCP in typical Florida paving materials and subgrade soils were conducted. Analysis of the data from these tests demonstrates the strength of Florida paving materials and subgrade soils can be readily estimated with data from the ADCP and existing correlations.
