The thesis describes a research that proceeds from a need to validate methods to211u001ecalculate the nonlinear vibrations of thin-walled cylindrical perfect and 211u001eimperfect shells, that were developed at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, 211u001eDelft University of Technology. This work was divided into three parts, (I) the 211u001edevelopment of a test setup for the nonlinear vibration tests of cylindrical 211u001eshells, (II) the measurement of nonlinear vibrations of two cylindrical shells 211u001ewithout imperfections and two shell with axisymmetric imperfections and (III) the 211u001evalidation of the calculation methods. The test setup was developed based on the 211u001eexperience gained from previous researchers. Contact-free excitation and 211u001emeasurement systems were employed to keep the characteristics of the shells 211u001eunchanged. A special attention was given to the development of the acoustic 211u001eexcitation system. To verify the functionality of the test setup, a preliminary 211u001etest was performed. The results indicated that the setup satisfied all prescribed 211u001ecriteria.
