All states recognize the importance of the Medicaid transportation program. Somestates have implemented legislative mandates to trim the program's growth or to provide more efficient services. These efforts should be undertaken with care, since any change in the program may affect access to medical services. Furthermore, since Medicaid is often the single largest funder of transportation services in many communities, the impact of any change on a region's often fragile and underfunded transportation network must be carefully evaluated.
