This report, required by the Inspector General (IG) Act of 1978, as amended,211u001esummarizes the activities and accomplishments of the Department of 211u001eTransportation's (DOT) Office of Inspector General (OIG) during the period April 211u001e1, 1998, to September 30, 1998. The report has been prepared in accordance with 211u001ePublic Law (P.L.) 100-504, IG Act Amendments of 1988, which changed reporting 211u001edefinitions for OIG and requires the reporting of management decisions on OIG 211u001eaudit recommendations. Because the role of OIG is to identify problems and 211u001eweaknesses and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse, our emphasis has been placed in 211u001ethe areas most susceptible or vulnerable to these problems. The reader should not 211u001eassume from this report that the significance of findings and recommendations 211u001edescribed are representative of the overall condition of DOT's programs and 211u001eoperations.
