Air Traffic Control: Weak Computer Security Practices Jeopardize Flight Safety

Security at our nations airports has received great attention in recent years due211u001eto several commercial aircraft explosions; however, securing our nations airports 211u001ealone does not ensure safe air travel. It is also critical to secure the Federal 211u001eAviation Administrations (FAA) air traffic control (ATC) computer systems that 211u001eprovide information to air traffic controllers and aircraft flight crews to 211u001eensure safe and expeditious movement of aircraft. Given the paramount importance 211u001eof computer security of ATC systems, you asked us to determine (1) whether FAA is 211u001eeffectively managing physical security at ATC facilities and systems security for 211u001eits current operational systems, (2) whether FAA is effectively managing systems 211u001esecurity for future ATC modernization systems, and (3) the effectiveness of FAAs 211u001emanagement structure and implementation of policy for computer security.
