The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, through the Environmental Technology211u001eVerification Program, is working to accelerate the acceptance and use of 211u001einnovative technologies that improve the way the United States manages its 211u001eenvironmental problems. As part of this program, the Consortium for Site 211u001eCharacterization Technology was established as a pilot program to test and verify 211u001efield monitoring and site characterization technologies. Reports documenting the 211u001eperformance of the other technologies have been published separately. The 211u001edemonstration was conducted at two geologically and climatologically different 211u001esites. The U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site, near Aiken, South 211u001eCarolina, and McClellan Air Force Base, near Sacramento, California. The 211u001edemonstration provided adequate analytical and operational data with which to 211u001eevaluate the performance of the inficon HAPSITE GC/MS system. The sample 211u001ethroughput rate of the HAPSITE was determined to be two to three samples per 211u001ehour. The HAPSITE detected all of the groundwater contaminants reported by the 211u001ereference laboratory at both sites which were present at concentration levels in 211u001eexcess of 5 ug/L. The results of the demonstration show that the inficon HAPSITE 211u001efield-portable GC/MS with its headspace sampling accessory can provide useful, 211u001ecost-effective data for environmental site characterization and routine 211u001emonitoring. As with any technology selection, the user must determine whether the 211u001etechnology is appropriate for the application by taking into account instrument 211u001eperformance parameters and the project's data quality objectives.
