Train to Wayside Identification System

Train to Wayside Communication (TWC) is an optional feature installed on some ofthe more advanced rail transit system. TWC typically provides two way data communication from moving trains to a central control center. Information such as vehicle numbers, train number, destination, location and vehicle health is transmitted. TWC is both expensive and usually provided, due to the complexity of the equipment and installation, as an initial feature of a transit system. The search began for an adequate replacement for TWC that would be inexpensive and could be installed on an operating system. This leads to a unique application of an existing automatic identification system.
