Preliminary Static and Dynamic Tests on Sandwich Plate

The report describes the set-up and results of static and dynamic tests on asandwich plate. The testing was undertaken to establish the mechanical properties of the plate prior to a drop test in the towing tank at MARINTEK. We found large discrepancies between the measured resonance frequencies and those found by FEM modelling. This could be due to properties of the experimental set-up. However, the authors conclude that observed frequencies in the drop test will not exceed 300Hz when the plate is loaded by water. The plate was instrumented with fibre Bragg gratings and resistive strain gauges for the statis tests. The testing was performed using the Material Test Machine at FFIFV. For the dynamic tests several accelerometers were added to the instrumentation, and a vibration exciter was used to excite the normal modes.
