Certain types of equipment, such as approach light masts and antennas, need to be211u001epositioned close to runways at airports because of operational requirements. The 211u001esupporting structures of such equipment must be of a 'frangible' nature, in order 211u001eto reduce the risks to aircraft in case of emergencies. In the feasibility study 211u001epresented, the suitability of the hybrid DRI/KRASH code to address this problem 211u001ewas investigated, by simulating the impact of a wing section on a fragible 211u001eapproach light structure. DRI/KRASH simulations were compared with experimental 211u001eresults. The impacts were shown to be simulated well with DRI/KRASH. The overall 211u001eforce of the impactor as well as the overall strain energy computed during the 211u001esimulations is in good correspondence with the experimentally determined values.
