Blending of thermoplastic polymer is, in principle, a flexible and cost effective way to generate new plastic materials, and to extend their applicability. Blending is used to modify, for example, the thermal, chemical, optical, mechanical or processing properties of various existing polymers. A well-known example is the impact modification of polymers by small dispersed rubber particles. There are numerous methods to combine polymers like e.g. reactor blending or chemical blending. Most polymer blends, however, are generated via melt-blending routes. Relative few combinations of polymers are miscible in a thermodynamic sense (meaning miscibility on the scale of chain segments, say 1-10nm), which is mainly due to their small configurational entropy of mixing. Consequently, melt-blending of two polymers usually results in a heterogeneous mixture, consisting of phase domains (i.e. the morphology), their properties, as well as their interaction at the interface.
