Pavement Condition Rating System: Review of PCR Methodolgy

This report describes the Pavement Condition Rating method which was developed211u001efor the State of Ohio Highway Network. The method is based upon visual inspection 211u001eof pavement distresses. Although the relationship between pavement distresses and 211u001eperformance is not well defined, there is general agreement that the ability of a 211u001epavement to sustain traffic loads in a safe and smooth manner is adversely 211u001eaffected by the occurrence of observable distress. The rating method described in 211u001ethis report provides a procedure for uniformity identifying and describing, in 211u001eterms of severity and extent, pavement distress. The mathematical expression for 211u001epavement condition rating (PCR) provides an index reflecting the composite 211u001eeffects of various distress types, their severity and extent upon the overall 211u001econdition of the pavement. Distresses of four (4) types of Pavements (Flexible, 211u001eComposite, Jointed Concrete and Continuously Reinforced or CRC) are described in 211u001ethis report and each distress is illustrated with the help of photographs.
