Influence of Cutting Fluid on Tool Temperature Distribution in Single Point211 Turning of Steel

Results from a study devoted to the cooling effect arising from the use of a211u001ewater based cutting fluid during the turning of quenched and tempered steel 211u001eSS2541 using coated hardmetal tool is presented here. Tool temperature 211u001edistribution with and without a coolant/lubricant. The FEM results were verified 211u001eusing experimental measurement of tool temperature during turning. The binder 211u001ephase transformation technique (BPT), based on the use of special hardmetal tools 211u001ewith Fe-Si binder exhibiting phase transformation at a specific temperature 211u001edeveloped earlier at SIMR, was used for this purpose. It is for the first time 211u001ethat a reliable experimental technique has been used to quantify the influence of 211u001ethe cooling effect provided by the cutting fluid. This information was used 211u001esuitably to refine our FEM calculations and very good agreement was seen between 211u001ethe experimentally measured and FEM based isotherms in the tool.
