Portable products such as pagers, cordless and digital cellular telephones,211u001epersonal audio equipment, and laptop computers are being used increasingly. 211u001eBecause these applications are battery powered, reducing power consumption is 211u001evital. In this report the authors give the properties of low power design and 211u001etechniques to exploit them on the hardware level such as: minimize capacitance, 211u001eavoid wasteful activity, and reduce voltage and frequency. The authors will then 211u001eelaborate on low power system-design techniques in which the main themes are to 211u001eavoid wasteful activity at system level and to exploit locality of reference. 211u001eFinally, the authors review energy reduction techniques in the design of a 211u001ewireless communication system, including error control, system decomposition, 211u001ecommunication and MAC protocols, and lower power short range networks.
