Summary Report of Research on Permanent Ground Anchor Walls. Volume 1. Current211 Practice and Limiting Equilibrium Analyses

Research directed toward improving the design and construction of permanent211u001eground anchor walls is presented. The research focused on tiedback soldier beam 211u001ewalls for highway applications. These walls are generally less than 25 ft high, 211u001eand they are supported by one or two rows of permanent ground anchors. This 211u001evolume is part of a four-volume report summarizing the research. It presents 211u001eapparent earth pressure methods for determining the lateral earth load. 211u001eDifferences between anchored and braced walls are discussed. The limiting 211u001eequilibrium bases for the apparent earth pressure diagrams are reviewed. Current 211u001eforce equilibrium methods (simple limiting equilibrium methods) for evaluating 211u001ethe external stability of an anchored wall are reviewed. A force equilibrium 211u001emethod is developed and used to illustrate how anchor position, soil strength and 211u001ethe location of the failure surface affect anchor load, and internal and external 211u001estability of a wall. The factor of safety inherent in the apparent earth pressure 211u001ediagram is determined. Recommendations for using general purpose slope stability 211u001ecomputer programs for determining lateral load and evaluating internal and 211u001eexternal stability of an anchored wall are made. This volume is the first in a 211u001eseries.
